#7 - Songs from Bureaucratic (a musical)

“Main Theme” and “Return Commute”
2

Today’s audio contains two short back-to-back pieces of music.

I had an idea for a musical. Magical realism. People exist in a space called “The Bureaucracy” and have vastly different perceptions of the same objects and events although they are oblivious to this (they assume their colleagues are having roughly the same kinds of experiences). Some characters find themselves in a kind of hell or prison where everything from elevators to office kitchens are dangerous. Others enjoy a more or less utopian existence, with computers and spreadsheets existing as creative and life-affirming tools. It’s chaotic at first but then someone comes along and helps everyone to see things through each other’s eyes. A veil starts to fall, revealing something altogether unexpected.

I thought it might be interesting to record and share these compositions with the idea that they’re part of a bigger story, to see what that might mean for the experience of writing and listening. As someone seeking new ways to both fuel and structure my creativity, it helps to have these kinds of challenges. You will hear a “Main Theme” as well as a very short piece called “Return Commute,” both within the same audio track.

Finishing a musical is neither something I expect to do, nor a priority, but sometimes a piece of music I’m working on seems like it kind of tells a story a bit more linearly than my other stuff and I get an idea like this. So don’t expect a musical out of me! … but don’t be surprised if I send you a few more pieces from the “soundtrack.”

Thanks for sticking around and I’ll see you on Friday for something slightly funkier.
