Last week I shared a piano improvisation played over the (minor key) drone of a shruti box. Today I’m sharing something similar but in a major key. When you like slow, ambient improvising as I do, it’s nice to have a drone to anchor things into a particular musical place.
I layered in audio from a recording I took on my phone a few weeks back: some of the local crows where we were staying at the time. I noticed that they (the crows) seemed have a different voice (fewer low frequencies maybe?) than the ones where I grew up. In any case it was interesting to take something that could be perceived as a jarring sort of sound, at least to some people or in certain moods, and try to situate that sound within background music.
I think these shruti box experiments provide two good examples of what this instrument can be, especially as they convey two distinct moods. You should listen to the first one if you haven’t already. Here it is.
