#46 - Waltzagonal

This was one of those “where did that come from?” musical moments. Sitting on the couch I had the thought to return to something I'd been toying with earlier, but in the triple time characteristic of a waltz. It just popped in there, like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man for Ray in Ghostbusters. From that thought and some experimentation, this piece came oddly quickly.

When we started our “mid-career gap year” and I named music-making one of my principal goals, I thought I'd be making a lot of ambient synthesizer music from software on our iPad but I had a hard time getting into that. So it's mostly been the keyboard and me, and things have sometimes gone in this neoclassical direction. This has been surprising both in the sense that it's a genre I didn't expect to explore so much, but also in more of a “wow, I can do this?” kind of way.

It's been cool to see where my mind has gone now that I've allowed it to go there, and to follow the thread of the things that “pop in there.”

I think this piece sounds pretty great but here are some notes-to-self for future recording considerations: Try slowing down. Maybe drop the “one” beats down an octave for further emphasis and interest. Consider adding a short section at the 40 second mark (just before jumping up an octave) to break up the main recurring pattern.
