Hello. I’m back with another piece of music after an unplanned week off from Notes Unfolding.
The title of today's piece refers to the high altitude desert region in which we are currently based for the month. The sun can be intense here but I found a space to record in the shade of the ubiquitous poplars of Ladakh. The only thing that bothered me while recording was an incapacitated bug that landed on a key and came close to slipping into the cracks.
You may notice a familiar rhythm if you’ve been listening closely in prior weeks. Certain chords that recur in this song (first heard between 00:14 and 00:30) hit on something that I like about some music, which is the possibility to use a tonal instrument to create something that sounds at once harmonious and dark. And maybe dissonant. This darker series of chords recurs after the decidedly more cheerful phrases first heard at 00:34. I thought those darker, more dissonant sounds would take on additional meaning and energy with the inclusion something a little brighter.
As always, thanks for being here and giving my music an ear. See you Friday with something for the autumn.
