#26 - Zero Bridge

Improvisation over a simple bass line
1

Greetings from the Vale of Kashmir. The title of today’s music, “Zero Bridge,” is a reference to a meeting point we used in this city yesterday, one of several bridges crossing the Jhelum River here in Srinagar.

This recording was kind of a technical experiment. I wanted to test out a simple function allowing me to record several parts onto a single file using the small field recorder I’m using for everything these days. This allowed me to record the three instruments, which you’ll hear (three types of piano / electric piano), without the need of a computer. I'll need to toy with the audio settings more to reduce the audible “hiss,” which you might notice.

I recorded the bass line using a Yamaha CP piano sound, then improvised on a Rhodes keyboard over that. Finally I added a few sparse acoustic (digital) piano chords. It's nice to have an ongoing bass line to improv over and I think the bass here has a kind of mystical feeling, which will be fun to play around with again.

Sometimes I feel happy just to have something to send out and lately some of these recordings have been a bit last-minute. I've contemplated giving myself an extended break or more time to work on a piece as opposed to continuing to try sending these twice weekly. But this schedule has been so crucial for my discipline and productivity so I'm going to try to stick with it.

Here's another photo from Zero Bridge. See you soon.
