Does my head look lumpy?
If so it’s because the doorframes in our guesthouse are much shorter than me and I smash my head on them once in awhile.
I don’t think you can see any head-lumps but I do make some weird faces. I get to think about that since I’m posting in video format today. I have to say that setting up the video kind of took away from the spirit of music making, but I figured that by now my huge fanbase would be dying for the chance to see my beautiful face. And the beautiful scenery. (Especially my face. And the scenery.)

As if I didn’t need another reason to overthink the process of making music. And this publication was supposed to take the overthinking out of it. I mean, it has to a large extent. Still, there’s often this sense of getting things right before they can go out, which I’ve had to force myself to walk away from many times.
Taking a couple of weeks off was essential. It gave me time to just play for fun without any thought of recording. It let me kind of recenter on a very raw and immediate part of the process, the “just sit down and play” that happens when you don’t have to worry about why you’re playing (and the additional cables and hardware needed for recording).
This can be hard. It’s tempting to always have the recorder nearby in case a great idea comes along that you don’t want to forget. It’s good in those cases to just use an app on your phone to record a few seconds but even that be a distraction if you’re in a good creative groove.
Anyway, about this song. I think it contains a lot of pretty heavily used chord patterns and motifs. Nothing ground breaking in that regard. I almost feel like it’s “my version” of something that already exists, even though I composed it. We’re always drawing from other stuff. A fun thing with this recording was including the background sounds like birds.
I had a hard time deciding on what tone to use. For the video I used a certain kind of electric piano but here’s a separate version where I used different EP tone.
(By the way, if for any reason the video isn’t working for you above, or if you just want a second chance to appreciate how my orange shirt compliments the greenery, you can also view it on my YouTube channel.)
We’re in Coonoor, south India for the week, among the tea plantations. I pretty much stick to coffee, but I have enjoyed trying a bitter cup of tea or two. Probably I brewed it wrong.
